Maintaining Mobility: Stretches and Exercises for Long-Term Joint Health

Mobility is defined as the ability to move or walk freely and easily.¹ Maintaining mobility is critical to functioning well and living independently. With age, many people experience changes in their mobility. There are many reasons for this, such as changes in gait, balance, and strength. These changes can begin to impair a person’s ability to move their body and in turn, affect their quality of life. So what can be done to maintain mobility? Studies show that engaging in physical activity is the only way to maintain mobility and independence in the long term.

Exercise can prevent and even reverse many age-related shifts in muscles, bones, and joints. It can make bones stronger and help to slow bone loss. Low-impact cardio exercises can be fun and helpful in maintaining mobility. It is important to choose exercises that one finds enjoyable and achievable.

Examples of Low-Impact Cardio Exercises:

  • Walking
  • Biking
  • Swimming
  • Water Aerobics

Stretching also helps to keep muscles strong and healthy. Stretches may help to improve range of motion as well as decrease the risk of injury. Without incorporating stretching into one's daily routine, muscles often shorten and become tight.

Examples of Mobility Training Stretches:

  • Foam Rolling - a self-massage technique that releases tension and tightness in muscles.
  • Dynamic Stretches - involves moving the body through a full range of motion, such as lunges, squats, and leg swings.
  • Neck Stretches - tight neck muscles can affect posture and balance, so it is important to stretch those muscles  regularly.
